Enzymes are proteins that help to speed up chemical reactions in the body. Enzymes are very specific in the functions, each one has only one reaction that it can help. Like all proteins the shape of an enzyme is what determines its function. High temperatures or extreme pH values can affect the shape of the enzyme molecule in a process called denaturing, this can make the enzyme less effective or not effective at all.
