The different stages of the cell cycle are distinguished by each stages' specific purposes. For example, the very first stage is distinguished by its purpose, so the first stage of interphase is cell growth. Next, the cell would stop growing to duplicate its DNA. Then it would continue to grow in the G2 stage, then move into mitosis.
